Comfortably nestled between Chinatown and the Fashion District, the Sixty Canada Toronto Showroom project finds itself in a historic building recently rejuvenated and repurposed from its manufacturing vocation. Weathered hardwood flooring, warehouse-styled windows and tall ceilings offer a neutral backdrop ready to receive this modest intervention of planes, volumes and material palette.
As stated in the corporate biography, the SIXTY philosophy espouses design synonymous with life, youth, action and energy. True to this directive, floating shapes, layered transparencies and playful kinetics combine to create an engaging market space for its users. Upon entry across the branded threshold, the visitor is challenged by an assertive monolith dividing private and semi-public zones. This self-illuminated, wood-paneled assembly features a slide-pivot reception desk and display shelving yet appears to mystically hover above the floor – freed from its supports.
Assorted wares from SIXTY, the renown and fashion-forward Italian manufacturer, are creatively merchandised throughout the space. At its perimeter, an extended wall featuring white-lacquered steel plates receives both flexible shelving as well as magnetic display pieces. Hanging items are accommodated throughout by ceiling suspended fixtures accented by translucent acrylic screens – in both rich reds and modest whites. Splashes of reds abound, a decisive tract of geometrically-patterned carpet tiles within the lounge and reception complete the ‘pop-art’ sensibilities.
